First of all it depends on how long you are planning to spend in India. If you have two weeks you can cover quite a lot of places in India. I will just give you a brief idea of the major spots you can try out
If you are a sea and beaches person:-
In my opinion the best beaches in India are in Goa. Not just in terms of the quality of beaches, but also the life and the unique culture of Goa. There are other beaches in Kerala and Lakshadeep if you are interested
If you are mountains person:-
Then go North. You should be visiting places like Shimla, Darjeeling etc. These are all in the Himalayas and are the best hill stations in the world. Do visit Hrishikesh if you are interested in adventure sports. Most of these hill stations also offer trekking(often across glaciers).
If you are back waters/lagoons person:
There is God's Own Country - Kerala - which is one of the most beautiful states in India. The backwaters in Kerala are the best places to spend a relaxing second honeymoon for a week. You can enjoy the freshly caught fish along with an enjoyable ayurvedic massage. Kerala also has decent beaches and hill stations, but go there for the backwaters
If you are culture/history buff:
Then the best place for you will be Rajastan. This state has some of the uniquely Indian culture and costumes. The desert state also boasts of some of the most panoramic forts and vistas in the country
Hope that was helpful. For more information checkout the website of Indian Tourism and Incredible India

I've been to Goa before. If you like beaches and good Indian food, I recommend going there.
