I just wondered why Indiana regulations don't make an RN, especially someone who only got the license as a just in case type situation keep updated on procedures and issues to renew their licenses? I work with someone who never had any on the job experience and only got the RN license as a just in case. She's been working in a factory for seven years. I would hate to think that she could get hired in a hospital or medical facility without ever retraining or having to update her skills. Seven years of not doing anything with it seems like a long time. Can anyone enlighten me on this.

Either she's been keeping her license active by earning the minimum continuing education hours to renew her license, or the license is expired and she'll have a lot to prove to the Board of Registration to get it renewed.

I guess to me it's no different than someone who jumps back into primary care after 7 yrs of working as a nursing administrator. Granted, as an admin that person is still familiar with procedures, but, as far as stamina is concerned, she's no different than someone straight off the street. Not very comforting, but it is the state of nursing we're in.
