If he were alive today, the Conservatives would call him a Socialist or a Communist. The fact that he was an environmentalist is enough to classify him as a Liberal.

Like a real person...he was a little bit of both. A person who has their mind made up on a issue before hearing all the facts are considered to be a zealot and should check their brain at the door. Teddy was a great man regardless of any liberal or conservative critics.

Teddy was a Conservative, and had not a bone in his body that was Liberal. He was a fighter, and strong, not weak and cowardly, like Liberals are today. "Talk softly and carry a BIG stick" was his motto. He lived by it. Because of a speech he was getting ready to do, his life was saved from an assassins attempt to kill him. A gun was shot off, and because of that speech in his coat, he lived. The manuscript blocked the impact.
God saved Teddy for the good of America, is how I see it. How could he not be a hero to us? The link below will tell you everything about him.

His environmental policies would be seen as liberal, while his itching to fight the Spaniards in Cuba would be seen as conservative. He spent many years before being president trying to expose all of the crooked people within the civil service/US postal service, so that would make him the watchdog media. Your choice.

Given how much the terms "liberal" and "conservative" have changed in the past century, I'm not sure such labels are particularly accurate nor relevant.

He is a liberal because he believed that we were all in this together and we as one should help our fellow American back up if they fall down instead of every man for himself. He built a social safety net in case another Republican great depression happens.

Conservative. I've always seen liberals yelling loudly and carrying signs never walking softly and carrying a big stick.

Excellent question. I think liberal - he understood government's legitimate stake in promulgating perfectly competitive markets (Sherman Anti-Trust Act) and in curbing predictable excesses of unrestrained capital when it comes in contact with exploitable resources (National Parks system).

One of my fave Teddy quotes.

"Let us speak courteously, deal fairly, and keep ourselves armed and ready."

Teddy was in favor of personal liberty, and believed in defending the USA. These qualities would make him a conservative these days.
