it were classified? Congress would still have access to it.. with their security clearance.. (they have access to everything as it is.. and they do a pretty good job of keeping things out of the publics sphere.. so the "leek" debate doesn't carry much weight).. they could possibly say "It's sometime in the next 5 years".. that would give the public some since of a time frame without giving much information to terrorists (that conservatives seem to be very upset with).. it's not exactly what either side wants... but it sounds like a fair compromise to me.. what about you?

I believe congress already has the highest security clearance.. yet the public doesn't know everything.. they are decent at keeping a secret.. as it is illegal for them to leak the info.

I would support a goal based date...it doesn't have to be a date, but an OBJECTIVE to meet for withdrawal. And I don't mind the idea of a classifeid date, either. And neither did most republicans, which is why they changed their minds when the language was changed. Of course you will find those who say NO! NO MATTER WHAT! WE ARE THER FOREVER! And then rant about how terrorists are hiding under your bed ready to kill you...

I was against the war from the beginning but I agree with Powell who said that since we broke it we're obligated to try and fix it. I don't agree with Bush on much but I've tended to agree that there should not be any public declaration of an withdrawal date. The only reason I can see for establishing a date is to make it clear to the government in Iraq that they have to step up to the plate and take responsibility for their own security. That's why keeping the information limited to a few members of congress is self defeating.

Hi Pip,
You raise an interesting point. The question is, are we served better by judging our actions by measuring the current state of the war, or by setting a time of withdrawal. History make a good guide. would it have helped if we had set a time line for ending WWII, WWI or say the Civil War. The Resistance of our foes in all three conflicts ended once they realized that we would prosecute those wars to there very end.

Your question is a pleasant relief from the rather angry and closed minded banter that has been going on this morning. We my disagree, but it a pleasure to debate honestly and courteously.

Wars do not run on timetables. It would still be a bad idea. As for trusting Congress with classified info, there are 2 known bribe takers in the house: William Jefferson D-LA, who is on the Homeland Security committee & Alcee Hastings D-FL who is on the Intelligence committee.

You can't keep a secret if more than one person knows it. How would you keep a secret with 535 congressman and senators as while as the administration and the military brass.

Doesn't the N.Y. Times blows our intelligence secrets daily? I think Bin Laden would get the fax in this cave before the ink was dry.

No. There should never be a specific withdrawl date. Even if it is classified it will leak then the terrorists will wait till we leave then flood Iraq and slaughter people by the thousands. Is that something you're willing to have on your conscience?

FYI a leek is a vegtable akin to an onion. I think you mean leak.

No. How can they know when they will be done? Things are headed in the right direction, but they are a long way from being finished. And, things can change in a moment.

Its not like scheduling a TV series' finale.

Not at all. The Treason Times (NYT) will get ahold of the withdrawal date and publish it for their Jihadist pals, along with instructions on how to build anti-aircraft weapons out of sand and goat crap.

If it were classified and if one of the Dems would not leak it then I would have less objection to a timeline.

To let your enemy know what you are doing is stupid.

This is my deal about deadline.

All the bad guys have to do is lay and wait.

After the deadline they come back in force.

Please note what happen to South Vietnam after the democrats pulled funding.

Pol Pot like to thank them.
