when you project so much of your own standards onto someone else, they tend to lose some respect for you. I've come to realize this based on the fact that you are not really allowing someone to be who they really are, and instead you're dictating to them how they should live their life. This is very different from offering guidance and wise advice. Do you find this to be true as well?

This is absolutely true.
People, most generally already know if they are doing things wrong for their life.
They don't need someone else putting their "2 cents" in.
This usually just complicates things.
And makes the person doubt their own feelings and decisions.
No two people are the same, and therefore, no two people deal with things in the same way.
It's what makes life interesting.
The differences, not trying to make people conform to your way. But, relishing in the fact that they have different perspective.
I find life is much more interesting when you just let people be who they are.

Yeah. My Mom never learned that lesson, and so I had to put up with her dictating to me.

I used to say that there were 2 ways to do anything, Mom's way, and the wrong way.

although i am relatively young, i find this to be only truer and truer as i age. not only do people feel attacked and that they must defend themselves when others enforce their opinions and values on them, they veiw it as a negetive quality on its own. as oxymoronic as it sounds coming from some one on yahoo ANSWERS, i find that truely wise advice comes from people who ask questions rather than tell answers. it is these questions that lead to self discovery and a true understanding of ones own values, not to mention, it is an invaluable intellectual excersize to probe the depth of your OWN mind and only use the ideas of others as sort of personal 'conversation' starters. a way to lead yourself to important questions.
