The bottom line is PRIDE! It is an unfortunate situation of the human ability to deal with other people; it seems that this is the best measure we have. The problem with this is that we do not always know the true financial situation of a neighbor or even a family member. They could be up to their neck in debt to impress others. This is neither healthy nor is it profitable for the individual or family over an extended period of time.
Ultimately, we are to compare ourselves to Jesus Christ. If we choose Him, it certainly takes the pressure off. As a matter of fact, it has a ripple effect if we communicate to our closest family and friends what we are doing.
Another factor that is so subtle, but true; most people would not want to be a slave to anyone, however, when we are in debt, we are a slave to the lender. This simple fact has been so commercialized by "Madison Ave." that we have been sucked into slavery, not realizing we have been hooked like an unsupecting fish.
When we mature and start thinking for ourselves with wisdom that can only come from God, we will do better for ourselves, our family, our churches and our country.
Stewardship of all that has been gloriously given to our great nation is at risk. We are so close to a huge fall much like Rome. History will repeat itself if we do not make correct, wise choices.
I trust that with all the knowledge available, we will be wise enough to maintain ourselves and our country in a manner that is pleasing to ourselves and to God, our creator.

I often ask myself that same question. I believe that people will often purchase items they really don't need to 'keep up with the jones' so to speak. Unfortunately our society focuses on material possessions, not religious or spiritual beliefs. Our society is a society that is full of debt. It seems to me that everyone has to have the best of the best, the newest cell phone, the coolest looking car, etc. A lot of people in our society are so hung up on the material possessions, when they should be focusing on helping out others in need of assistance. It's sad that a lot of people are materialistic.

B/c they are vain and think it's important to show off, even if they have no means to support the lifestyle they would like to lead. Sometimes we have to do without and watch our spending- people in the past did that, when there was no credit cards.

I would like to know that also. I think that most people are too vain. They do not want someone else to know that they aren't loaded.
