When glycogen stores are not available in the cells (glycogen is primarily created when carbohydrates such as starch and sugar are consumed in the diet), fat (triacylglycerol) is cleaved to give 3 fatty acid chains and 1 glycerol molecule in a process called lipolysis(as fats are made up of fatty acids and glycerol).
Most of the body is able to utilize fatty acids as an alternative source of energy in a process where fatty acid chains are cleaved to form acetyl-CoA, which can then be fed into the Krebs Cycle for energy.

Ketosis is a stage in metabolism occurring when the liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies which can be used by the body for energy. Most medical resources regard ketosis as a pathological state associated with chronic starvation.

Acetone, acetoacetate and beta-hydroxybutyrate are called ketone bodies produced from acetyl-CoA mainly in the mitochondrial matrix of liver cells when carbohydrates are so scarce that energy must be obtained from breaking down fatty acids.Acetone is formed from spontaneous decarboxylation of acetoacetate.
Any production of these compounds is called ketogenesis, and this is necessary in small amounts.

But, when excess ketone bodies accumulate, this abnormal (but not necessarily harmful) state is called ketosis.
When even larger amounts of ketone bodies accumulate such that the body's pH is lowered to dangerously acidic levels, this state is called ketoacidosis.

Ketoacidosis is a type of metabolic acidosis which is caused by high concentrations of keto acids(are also formed by the deamination of some amino acids.) This is most common in untreated type 1 diabetes mellitus, when the liver breaks down fat and proteins in response to a perceived need for respiratory substrate. It can also occur with people undergoing hunger strikes, fasting over 3 days, or people starving to death as the body is forced to break down fat for sustenance due to their lack of outside nutrition.

Ketoacidosis should not be confused with ketosis, which is one of the body's normal processes for the metabolism of body fat. In ketoacidosis, the accumulation of keto acids is so severe that the pH of the blood is substantially decreased.

The body doesn't like to use fat as a food source. The brain and heart can use fats, but prefer carbohydrates. Metabolizing fats at an accelerated rate is not that easy. That's why it is sometimes quite hard for some people to lose weight. Starvation may work but is not advisable. Anyway, when your body is in catabolysis, there is production of acids and ketones that can affect you blood pH. You would then breath faster (harder) to compensate. Diabetics in ketoacidosis often exhibit Kussmaul breathing as a result of this mechanism (high ketones from lipid metabolism causing acidosis and hyperventilation).

One of the main by-products of metabolism is CO2. If more CO2 than usual is produced, this can cause acidosis. This is because CO2 combines with H2O in the presence of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase (present in blood) to form carbonic acid. This breaks down to bicarbonate ion and H ions. Since pH is the negative log of the hydrogen ion concentration, and increase in CO2 (and thus, H ions), decreases pH (i.e., makes it more acidic).

Music allows you to eat more. According to a survey by the journal Psychology as well as Marketing, soft, classical tunes encourage that you take time over your dinner, so you consume more meals. So, switch off – silence is likely to make you more aware of what you’re adding your mouth.

Acquire smaller plates. Little crockery means portion control is much easier – those diminutive helpings suddenly look huge and you’ll be happier to use less.
