The people who have already answered this question have said that the union is not random, because the gametes are not supplied entirely randomly (we tend to be attracted to people who are genetically dissimilar to ourselves, and we are not generally attracted to people whose appearance is grossly assymetrical, and so on).

There is a further layer of non-randomness involved: not all sperm are equal. Some are more motile, and some just don't cut the mustard. (And the ovum is a more active participant in the process than is often assumed.)

Nevertheless, there is a certain degree of randomness involved, in that, from time to time, a sperm is going to get lucky: and if what makes that sperm unique confers an advantage on the individual that develops, then that is going to give that individual a reproductive advantage.

Having said that, the fact that we are human, and human societies have quite definite aesthetic and other preferences also makes a difference. For example, most people think monobrows are unattractive: and so individuals with monobrows are less likely to find a partner quickly, and thus a little less likely to reproduce. However, there are one or two tribes in Southern India which see things quite differently, and consider monobrows attractive. So there are societal pressures there which will mean that those people are selecting for different genes to the rest of us.

Similarly, there is a tribe in Africa which values difference, and regards a baby that is different to the norm as being an especial blessing to the family and the tribe. Those babies are then favoured over others. As a result of that birth abnormalities (such as albinism) are more common among them than among most other human societies. Thus, again, there are societal pressures which would result in greater genetic variation among those people than most of the rest of us.

There, that has probably added to your confusion on what is a very involved topic, with many possible answers and ways of looking at the question.

Whose society?

Besides, I'd say the answer was no. I know in some biological cases you have to assume random gamete fusion, but in reality it never happens like that. Not all the individuals are as likely to mate for a start; homosexual males will most likely never mate with females.

Perhaps a rephrase of the question; 'Do people sleep with each other randomly' highlights the fact that it is not true. People couple up with people because of the qualities they appreciate in each other, and no two people will prefer exactly the same qualities in a person.

Did you know that gametes are related to the old (maybe new as well) Greek word for marriage. It's gameo, like game. Cults play complex games and they also involve things like sexual abuse, although I don't think they do right by babies. In fact, some people treat all babies as if they belong to society, not the parents. I've met doctors like this. I tend to think that sex is highly political. They say we are all connected by six degrees of separation. I think it is true that there is more planning behind the scenes than it just being random all the time. Because of Darwinian fitness, it seems like people are supposed to have sex as much as they can, just to stay in the game for when they are ready to conceive. Either that, or all the sex is to give the powers-that-be something to hold over your head so that you choose the "right" partner. There's so much racism that goes on with inter-racial babies, although I think class might overrule that.
