Save time booting up your computer

One of the most frustrating moments of my morning is getting to work and sitting there for 10 minutes while my computer boots up. Most mornings, I can get a cup of coffee and visit coworkers while my computer starts and Outlook, IE, and the other applications I use regularly open. My wait time is even more frustrating when I have an early meeting and need a document, but spend the first half of the meeting waiting for my computer to start.

One way I’ve learned to save time in the morning is to put my PC into hibernation mode in the evening. By putting my PC into hibernation mode, all the applications and documents I had open will be exactly the same as they were when I left the previous evening. Hibernate saves an image of your desktop with all open files and documents, and then it powers down your computer.

To put your computer in hibernation:

Open the Control Panel and double-click Power Options.
Click the Hibernate tab and tick Enable Hibernation. Click OK.

When you leave your computer, click Start and then Turn Off Computer.
Hold down SHIFT and a new Hibernate option will appear. Click Hibernate.
Your computer will save its state to memory and shut down. When you turn on your computer, your files and documents will open on your desktop exactly as you left them.
This feature saves me about 15 minutes a day in the morning. Give it a try and let me know if it helps you.

Honestly, the best thing you can do right now to increase the performance of this machine is to add more memory.

256mb of memory on a machine that is probably running Windows XP is not enough.

You are also going to want to get a anti-spyware program such as Spybot S&D or Adaware. Here are a couple of links.

First, download CCleaner from www.ccleaner.com which will delete temporary files and correct registry errors (Issues). First click on Cleaner with the Advanced entries unchecked except for "Old Prefetch data". Then click on Issues and scan for issues. Have it fix them all and make backups in case something gets erased that shouldn't (although I've never had problems with CCleaner's issue fixes). Then Scan for issues again until you get "No issues found". Then click on Tools and uninstall programs you don't want, and while in Tools click on Startup to remove things you don't want starting automatically. If you're unsure what you need to keep you can google for advice or email me with your questions.

Once you've got that all cleaned up, you need antispyware protection. Download Hitman Pro from www.hitmanpro.com which will install a number of excellent free or free-to-try antispyware programs and let you update and run them all in Safe Mode with one click.

Sorry to tell you this, I asked a few computer technicians about laptops before buying mine and they all told me to stay away from Acer. Most recommended Sony or Toshiba. They cost more but you get what you pay for.
