Ooooh yes sir! But you better not be sitting in my seat when I get there. My favourite favourite place in Amsterdam is Abraxas. I have the Tshirt. And the mug. You can get smoothies and weed by the spliff, every one is very friendly but not too in your face and the interior is GORGEOUS, it's like a little Moroccan fantasy. Find it here: http://www.abraxasparadise.nl/
A really good intro to the coffee shop scene is the world renowned Bulldog Cafe, a 3 minute walk from Abraxas (or 6 hours if you're high on 'shrooms). I highly recommend the skunk hot chocolate, but you need to keep stirring it. See: http://www.bulldog.nl/
I really could go on, but at the end of the day it's down to personal choice. If you want to have a good time in Amsterdam, my tip is that there is something for everyone, but I guarantee you won't like every thing you see so if something clashes with your principles; just move on and find something else to enjoy. Smoke-wise; don't be a typical brit and think you're hard enough and can smoke anything - I did and collapsed in the Dungeons! The staff in the coffee shops are so knowledgeable, if you tell them how much you normally smoke and what hit you are looking for they will be able to recommend something you are likely to enjoy. Same goes for mushrooms.

I just got back two days ago and I feel that a lot of the coffee shops are comparable in price and quality for a non expert like myself. The ones that were the most crowded usually were for a good reason. As far as cheap beer I found if you take the metro away from Dam Square and the central station things get a tad cheaper but not many bargins to come by.
