Let x be the number of freshmen, and y the number of others

x = 3y/5 ===> y=5x/3

x+y=1,200 // y=5x/3

x + 5x/3 = 1,200 // multiply by 3

3x + 5x = 3,600

8x = 3,600

x = 450.

Let x represent "other students"
let f represent "freshmen"
f + x = 1200
f = 3/5x
3/5x + x = 1200

3/5x + 5/5x = 1200
8/5x = 1200
x = 750

f = 3/5*750 = 450

There are 450 freshmen, and 750 other students.
