I've been offered a 3 year old pool set up for free. I'm trying to decide if I can afford the maintenance, electricity, chemicals, etc. Can anyone give me some approximate costs. I'm in middle Tennessee, it would not be heated.

Find a pool supply shop and price out their chemicals. They vary from state to state. You need chlorine for sure. One large tub of it and some bromine to keep the Ph balance in the pool. Also a test kit so you can see what chemical you are low in before you dive in.. we have had one for 7 years and one large tub of chlorine and smaller container of bromine is just about all you need for the year. Oh and a net to take out leaves. We have an automatic bug that wanders the pool during the summer month to take the algae off the sides but you can do that yourself from inside the pool if you use it enough.
We let it go fallow in the winter/fall and then hit it with 3 small bags of shock to bring back into blue water in the spring time.

It depends on the size of the pool. The bigger the pool the more monthly cost in chemicals, electricity, and the cost of water. We had a 24 foot round pool & ran the filter 12 hours per day (so you need to know how much power [wattage] it consumes & the cost per kilowatt hr. youe electricity is). Then you have to vacuum the pool at least once a week to keep it clean which means you need to backwash the filter and add water to the pool. Then there are the chemicals- chlorine, algecide, Ph+/- that you need to add to keep it going. And of course, there is always the inevitable broken hose or some other part that needs to be repaired/replaced. Personally I was never so happy as I was the day we got rid of our pool. First year you'll be in it all the time, second year less time and finally you just become a pool maintainence slave after that.

I'm not sure on the maint fees but don't try to keep it up yourself. I had an above ground pool. I was able to maintain for a couple of months. I got lazy and it all went bad. Cost went way up trying to shock and rebalance the ph.

BESIDES COST OF UPKEEP CONSIDER THIS
1. Make sure it will not be installed close to power lines. You will be using a long metal handle.
2. You need 4 inches of builders sand under the liner.
3. You will need a new liner. The current liner is stiff and and cannot be used again without a lot of wrinkles. They trap dirt and algie.
A free pool is never free.
