He's going on 5 months and he is now taking the cereal fine at night, should I feed him cereal in the morning also? He's not lacking in weight, I don't want to over feed him or expand his stomach. Also is it ok to give other baby foods such as bananas or apples or should I just stick with the cereal for now..

Is he sitting up on his own? Is he eager about food and reaching for yours?

With a breastfed baby, esspecially, it is important to hold of on solids for as long as possible.

The introduction of solid food changes the way they absorb the iron in your milk. By waiting as long as possible, you ensure that they won't become anemic.

Rice cereal is a really bad choice for first food. Infants don't make very much amylase, the enzyme that digests grains, so they can't really digest it. And because its "enriched" They have taken out all the natural goodness of rice (20+nutrients) and added back 4. Those 4 are of questionable bioavailability, so whether or not they can even absorb them is scetchy.

Some of the best first foods are bananas and avocados. They are both PACKED with nutrients. Fresh is ALWAYS best. Jarred is lacking alot (and its expensive!). The jarring proccess kills all the enzymes and some of the nutrients.

One food at a time, increasing after 2 weeks. I would feed him in the morning not the evening so he has all day to adjust his food changes. Eating a new food at night might disturb his sleeping patterns.

Skip the apples (they are very sour on little tummies) and the bananas (they can cause constipation). Give him the baby cereal and mix in a few of the Step 1 Gerber foods.

You won't over feed him. He's not on a diet and counting calories. He'll stop eating when he's full.

I would just stick with the cereal for now and wait until six months and start with a little baby food mixed with the cereal. I would also suggest talking with you son's doctor about it at his next appointment. He or she can give some better suggestions.

Don't give him too much. Stick to only mornings first. 'Cos their body is still too delicate to hv it work at night. U mean fruit puree? Shld be ok. But dun hurry him up. Take it slow. If the paediatrician says he's healthy, stick to his current diet for a few mths more. My son started his oats at 9 mths. Before that, he's always on formula milk 'cos he refused food. Then at 12 mths, he started on porridge for his lunch. So, he started his 3 meals a day when he turned 1 year. I also made sure he drinks a little bit of squeezed orange juice once a day to help him with his bowel movement.

Most experts are now saying to wait until 6 months to start solids. Babies don't really need anything but breastmilk for 9-12 months. So if you want to give baby some cereal or fruit now, fine; but no need to rush it. He won't overeat as long as you don't push food on him (he will loose interest or turn his head when he is done).

Ask your pediatrician. Everyone has differing opinions on this and your doctor will know what to do and when it should be done. You want to introduce these new things slowly and over time. And adding fruits before vegetables is asking for trouble. Vegetables don't taste as yummy as the fruits and some babies refuse to eat the vegies for a time because they aren't as sweet as the fruits.

Ask your doctor, not us...
