Maurice Brooks lists Dirk, Nash, and Kobe as the top 3. I would agree. Which 1 deserves the award? Let's compare the three.

Kobe is definitely a great player and superb scorer, but when it comes to shooting percentages for all three areas (PTs, 3PTs, and FTs), he is dead last. He has about half the rebounds of Dirk, and half the assists of Nash.

Nash is unarguably the least selfish player in the league w/ 11.5 APG. Alas when it comes to scoring and rebounding, he just doesn't contribute much. Of the three, he is the best percentage shooter. I wonder why he doesn't shoot more.

When it comes to assists, Dirk just doesn't have it. But he doesn't need it when he and his teammates can shoot. Dirk leads the three in rebounds and FT% (89.9% to 88.7% and 86.6% [check your stats Adam C.]). He leads Nash in points, and Kobe in PT% and 3PT%. He has only missed one game all season. And there is no doubt he is the best player on the best team in the league.

I have read a lot about Nash beating Dirk in double overtime, but realize, it took him double overtime to do it. Dirk had already beat Nash twice before that. In the 3 contests Dirk has outscored Nash 92-76. Even in the loss Dirk was only outscored by 2 (32-30).

And what did they do after that game? Nash led his team to back-to-back losses. Dirk? 8 straight wins.

I vote for Dirk.

As much as I like Nash to be this years MVP, I think Dirk probably deserves it. With the nice record dallas has and the current numbers Dirk has been putting up I agree with you that Dirk deserves MVP.

Just want to say that Dirk doesn't have a higher FT percentage.

The real question is who is the Most Valuable Player, not who is the better player.?

Steve Nash is without a doubt more valuable to the Suns than Dirk is to the Mavericks. Someone here argued that Dirk's teamates can shoot, but since Dirk doesn't share the ball, then it becomes apparent that he isn't quite as valuable. At least, no more valuable than Kobe Bryant, because Dirk's role is to score just as much as it is Bryant's. Heck, even Bryant sets his teamates up more than Dirk (not by much).

Assists are the most underrated statistic in the NBA, but ask Karl Malone and Kareem Abdul Jabbar what assists from Stockton and Magic (respectively) did for their careers. Steve Nash is carrying the Suns simply by creating open shots for his teamates. Teams know he can score at will but he doesn't have to because he's smart enough to know to pass up on the contested shot when he's double teamed and give the ball to your open teamate.

And Steve Nash has the most charges taken, by far, than any other player in the league, so he does play defense, it's just not represented in statistical numbers. Remember when he was with Dallas and getting 2 steals per game? Nash has evolved his game to fit in with the Suns extremely fast-paced style of offense, which is another testament to his game.

Listen, I know Steve Nash hasn't won a championship, but neither has Dirk Nowitski. I know Nash probably doesn't deserve to be mentioned as one of the elite players of all time becauseh e has 3 straight MVP's, but let's face it, you can't blame Steve Nash for the lack of superstar talent in the NBA right now. The game has changed, it's become much more team oriented than ever before, and Steve Nash is the face of that evolution. The days of superstars are winding down as the overall talent of the NBA increases and becomes more and more a WORLDLY game.

Think about it like this... teams have stopped Lebron James and Carmello Anthony and Dwayne Wade and Gilbert Arenas and Kobe Bryant and Carlos Boozer and Mehmet Okur and Ray Allen and so on and so forth. NO TEAM has stopped Steve Nash from making an impact on the game, whether he's sharing the ball or taking the team on his shoulders and scoring 40 points.

Is Dirk Nowitski the better player? Probably. Is he more valuable than Steve Nash (or even Kobe Bryant)? Definately not.

Lebron is my favorite player but given the run that Dallas has had you have to go with Dirk.

Kobe's still a ballhog. Nash could make a case for a three-peat. But I hope Dirk. This year is his best chance...
