It depends where you find things, buses, taxis and trains all have by - laws governing found property which should be handed to them and is theirs if no one claims it you found something in a shop or office same thing if no one claims it becomes theirs. If you find something in a public place you hand it into the police they will keep it for a specified time and if no one claims it you can but it technically remains the property of the owner and though they cannot claim you stole it they can ask for it back or for recompense.

I'm a law student and have just been learning about the law surrounding theft. Knowing what I know now I'd probably think twice.

If you found a ring in the middle of a city centre and looked around to see if anyone was looking for a ring, there was no one looking, then you took the ring, although there has been a accumulation, your mens rea (GUILTY MIND) was not entirely dishonest, as long as you took reasonable steps to ascertain the rightful owner, unsuccessful, you then took the ring to your possession I think you'd be alright.

In my state, the police keep the ring while you advertise its finding for 60 days. If no one claims it, it's yours.

There is a waiting period for claiming. If the owner of the ring does not claim it in a specified period of time, the "finder" can become the "keeper".

I'm assuming maybe you've found the ring?

They would say thanks for being so honest, then make their way to the nearest pawn shop.
