Q: Jim spends 28% on housing, 15% on food, 11% on clothing, 15% on transportation, 11% on education, 7% on recreation, and saves the balance. If the savings are $266.50 per month, what are his monthly earnings?

I'm thinking that I add the different percentages and divide $266.50 by the result. Am I right?

All together it's 87% so he has 13% left in savings.

13% of earnings=$ 266.50

.13 * earnings = 266.5
Divide

So 266.5/.13=$2050

Percentage of his monthly savings= 100-(28+15+11+15+11+7)

=100-87
=13%

Let Jim's total income be x.

Therefore,

13% of x = 266.5
13/100*x=266.5
x=266.5*100/13=$1742.31

You have to add the different percentages and then subtract the sum from 100. Then divide $266.50 by the result

Adding the percentages gives you a 13% savings which equaled to $ 266.50. The remaining 87% are for expenses from his monthly earnings.So you would divide 266.50 by 13%

266.50/.13=$2050 as the monthly earnings
Monthly earnings 2050.00
-Savings/ monthly 266.50

Expenses 1783.50

you should add the percentages, subtract the answer from 100, divide that by 100, then divide $266.50 by your answer:
28+15+11+15+11+7=87
100-87=13
13/100=.13
$266.50/.13=$2050

If you add all the percentages, this means that his savings account for 13% (100 percent - the other percentages of 87 percent total = 13 percent).

So, you now know that 13% = $ 266.50.

Use the words to turn into equation.

13% of x total dollars = 266.50
.13 (x) = 266.50
divide both sides by .13
x = $ 2050.00

hope this helps you!

Percentage used: 28+15+11+15+11+7 = 87%
Percentage saved = 100% - 87% = 13%

If X = monthly earnings,
(13/100)X = 266.50
X = (266.5)/(0.13) = $2050.00
