Hi. I got a pair of Altec Lansing noise canceling 'phones and really like them, especially for gaming. Radio Shack sells a simple switch to change between headphones and speakers without disconnecting them.

Speakers are for sharing music with other people around the area or when you don want something to be on your ear.
Headphones may sound better (depends on which model you use) and it is mostly for personal use.

if you are asking in reference to sound quality speakers are better then headphones.

Sound quality is normally better with external speakers.
Heaphones are meant as an accessory & not a replacement for speakers.
