it is illegal to keep a water moccasin as a pet. the game wardens will come down heavy on you. if you have enough money to pay the high fines, go for it and good luck.

For starters, most states require permits to have exotics like venomous (there is no such thing as a poisonous snake people, think about what you say)snakes. Also if you are not an experienced handler it is probably the dumbest thing you could possibly want. One mistake, and you are a goner. Another thing you should know is where can you get some anti-venom for safety's sake. Even experienced venomous snake owners keep these on hand just in case. And they are not cheap. Most states will not even allow the sale or ownership of venomous snakes or turtles for that manner. Most cities and towns have ordinances that ban such animals. I am not even supposed to have my monitor lizard and he is nowhere near as dangerous as a cottonmouth. Although he does like the taste of a semiwarm cottonmouth for a snack. There are alot of snakes that look like them, another user posted a site to look at. Look at them and decide. I have a Sinoloan milk snake totally harmless (unless you are a rat) that looks just like a coral snake. But if you need to get a venomous snake, get a diamonback rattler. They are friendlier that a water mocassin. And for Shanna M, where do you plan on studying/practicing herp sciences? If they really are your majors 1) it's poisonous ont posonus and 2) it's VENOMOUS not poisonous. Clorox is poison, Cottonmouths are venomous. That is one of the first things you are taught when studying herps. I really hope you do not plan on being a reptile specialist because if you are, you got a looooooooooooong way to go. Those are elementary school mistakes not college mistakes. I feel sorry for you if thats what the teachers are teaching you, that kind of teaching can lead to embarassing foot in mouth incidents.

I wouldn't recomend it. Venomous reptiles should only be kept by experts and even they get killed by their pets.
I'm a lucky fool, I caught a Cottonmouth in se texas and didn't know what it was(I was 9) and wandered all over the place showing to people. An old guy told me I should put it down and walk away, thats a poison snake.
See I'm lucky fool. I thoguht it was a watersnake that lives in the region.

Well, it is a poisonous snake and you need a permit to have one. You will also have to milk it so it won't inject poison if you are holding it and it bites you. I don't know if it is a good idea or not. That is up to you and you alone. You should also go to a Reptile Breeder's Expo and ask around there. The breeders will be a good source to talk to and ask questions. They may also be abal to tell you where to get one besides going out and catching one in the wild which will NOT be a good idea. The final decision is up to you and the people in your house.

These are venomous snakes and very dangerous as a pet. You wouldn't be able to hold it - it would be more like a fish in a tank.
Also, you would have to check the laws in your area. a lot of places require you to have a special license to keep poisonous snakes.
I would seriously ask yourself why you want to have a poisonous snake. Is if for the coolness factor? To impress friends?
There are a lot of really beautiful snakes that are not poisonous that you could keep and still be able to handle - and they would still be cool.

Stupendously bad idea , unless your an expert on venomous snakes then don't even bother them. Let them live in the wild.

of course not! They're pretty venomous and if you have no experience then you can get killed. No venomous snake is a good pet.

Sure and you can take him out and play with him when your friends come over. Just keep plenty of anti-venom on hand you'll need it. (I love to see it when nature cleans out the stupid ones from society.)
