yes that is exactly what i thought, i quite liked it and then it just seemed pointless, like a little bit had just been stuck on at the end, that is totally what i thought when i saw it!

I don't know if it would have made it better but it would have been ok. But omitting the last 20 minutes would have taken away from the fairy tale like nature of the story.Ending it on the Blue Fairy would be the completion of his side quest but not on his overall journey to find his "mother".So the ending as it is the film reaches some sort of emotional closure and when the mechs shut him down which is seen as David going to sleep,it has the happily ever after aspect of a fairy tale, because he finally got what he wanted, love from his mother. A SEVERELY underrated movie.

YES!! Totally agreed. I saw it in the theatre with a buddy of mine and we were about to get up and leave at that point. Then it was like, "whoops, there's more." The "more," unfortunately, wasn't worth staying for. Can I get my 20 minutes back? :-)
Eliminating the last 20 minutes wouldn't have made it a hit, but it would have sucked less.

I think so.
When I saw it at the cinema, people were putting on their coats at that point, but then it went on and on.
It's one of the annoying things about Spielberg.
He just doesn't know how to finish films without a sickly-sweet, mawkish ending.
It's still beautiful to watch though.
The special effects are amazing, and the music is sublime.
Especially the piano and voice song.

yes.. i also agree. the aliens thing was a bit.. much. but i don't think it detracted from the overall feeling of the movie... it was just a bit unnecessary as it reiterates that all he wanted was this Love from his mother...which i believe the blue fairy represented, but spielberg wanted an OBVIOUS translation of that love.....
btw i LOVED this movie and cried buckets and buckets...
teddy ROCKS

Totally agree with you, but it's Steven Spielberg's own fault.
He just couldn't resist adding in his own E.T. feel to someone else's work.
The movie didn't quite live up to all the hype regardless.
