or better still, shouldn't they just ban Americans and anyone else that can't speak and write English properly from using this site until they can?

They start in their FIrst Grade don't they?

Right! At the beginning of the class, shouldn't they make each pupil at that tender age write out 1000 times the following:-

I must learn the meaning of the word Etymology
I must learn the meaning of the word Etymology
I must learn the meaning of the word Etymology
etc., etc., ....

In addition, when they go to their first English Language lesson shouldn't the teacher have the following sign printed on the front of his/her desk:-

Less is more:
Any pupil using words with more syllables than are necessary to make meaningful sentences will be given detention for one hour every day they're at school until they get it right!

Shouldn't it be mandatory that all English teachers in American schools take degrees (or what passes for them there) in the subject of Etymology?

People who can speak more than their native tongue should be given some latitude with regards to my question as knowing more than one language is to be admired and now that both my country the UK and America have made a complete 'pigs ear' of the Iraq situation, shouldn't it also be mandatory that we start teaching OUR kids Arabic starting at Primary School or First Grade as those silly fools simplistically call it, so that our future generations can start to put right the harm we have done up to the present?

Well Joe - what do they say in computer parlance - ''garbage in garbage out'' - I can't believe I'm quoting from a kindergarten continent phrase!

It is the goal of most teenagers to use the word LIKE as often as possible in every sentence. It's an elective BAD habit. American teens tease the smart students and applaud the dummies. They are emotionally underdeveloped children. Once they become adults they will grow out of this need to come across as incompetent. They will eventually evolve by using their vocabulary effectively. But for now, we can tell the who's intelligent and who needs to go through puberty.

First off, it is very difficult to distinguish the stupid from the illiterate on here. Illiterate means they lack the knowledge to express themselves correctly in ENGLISH. Being stupid means they were born and educated in the USA and chose NOT to go to school. These individuals are not interested in expressing themselves correctly.

Foreigners just have not learned all there is to learn about our language. It is an on-going process for them and they are excused from judgement. The one thing they must keep in mind is that we cannot speak their language well which is why we don't go into their forums and voice our opinions.

BOTH have the option to CHECK SPELLING on this site ^

"Grade" is not a proper noun, and the "G" should not be capitalized.
The first two letters in "FIrst" should not be capitalized.
"Etymology" is not a proper noun and should not be capitalized.
There is no need for a dash after a colon.
"Primary School" is not a proper noun.
The note under "Additional Details" is a run-on sentence.

Encouraging children to use words with more syllables helps them increase their vocabulary which helps them express themselves more effectively.

Practice what you preach. Then practice some more.

We don't need to get hardcore on Yahoo! Answers, I don't think, but I wish more people would use the button that says "Check Spelling" when posting.

As for teachers, I don't think etymology is as important as studying the psychology of learning, which isn't covered in most teaching programs.
