The medical field is great... you hold lives in your hand and you feel so good seeing people go home healthy. I'm a senior in high school, and I work in a nursing home. Although it can be depressing at times, you witness micracles everyday. I have a resident who is blind and was not able to walk for years. Now with help she can walk all throughout the facility. It is really a rewarding job.

Seems like forever ago, I was an assistant to a graduate student who was pursuing her MS in chemical engineering. I was counting, measuring some sort of crystals using microscope. It was not that exciting nor rewarding task.
I want you to aware that if you want to do your own research that can be exciting and rewarding, you have to go to all the way, such as Ph.D and even post-doctorate work.
Ask yourself and close family and friends whether you are ready to commit to 6-10 years of hard work in highly stressful, competitive environment.
Job shadowing is a practical way to check out whether lab work is a good match for your aptitude and personality. See for yourself whether you can tolerate some strong chemical smell.
On brighter side note, research grants from school or industry in science are easier to find than those for social science.
