Pick up everything you find...then sell it at a vendor in in the Auction House. Also, do quests...you will usually get some sort of compensation (either straight gold or items that you can either use or sell).

If you have a level 60 character and the new expansion, go over to Hellfire penninsula and start farming for green's they can be sold at 5-8 g a piece and you'll get good xp doing it. if you dont have the expansion Tyrs hand in Western plague lands is a good place to farm.
