Because Afghanistan was a backward nation which the US was able to subdue with a few thousand men. Dropping a pile of US soldiers in Afghanistan would have been pointless and would have caused the US to be, like the Russians were, targets of guerilla attacks. A hundred thousand troops would not have made it easier to find bin Laden. In addition, the US knew that there would be another phase in the global war (Axis of Evil), and since we have a limited number of troops it was thought best not to use them up in Afghanistan when they were not needed there. We have no interest in ruling Afghanistan, we just wanted Al Qaeta out of there.
We are in Iraq because the global war on terrorism is more than just bin Laden. It is a battle to prevent the greater danger of rogue states ruled by megalomaniacal dictators that may get nuclear or other catastrophic weapons. Iraq was first on the list because it was the weakest and because it had the longest laundry list of legal violations, invasions of other countries, human rights atrocities and the like. It was also thought that they were seeking nukes, etc.
The US just ran a homeland security drill designed to address simultaneous attacks on 10 United States cities. To pull that off an organization MUST have support of a nation state. And the key suspects were Iraq, Iran and N.Korea for obvious reasons.
What happened to bin Laden? He's either dead or still on the run.

The U.S. does have troops in Afghanistan, not as many are needed there because the Afghans aren't killing each other. If Bin Ladin is still alive, he's in a cave somewhere near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

sounds like that police familiar is in with the Taliban. Why else could he say US troops are wanted? i'm sorry yet this dem believes in getting those in the back of 9/11. Bush must have never invaded Iraq and wasted the time, factors and the lives of our service men and females by technique of leaving in the back of them in Afghanistan. that is achieveable the Taliban could were compelled out by technique of now and their practise grounds leveled. that is achieveable Ben weighted down does no longer were waiting to flee to Pakistan. we are going to never understand because of W's incompetence and ego. ############### CINNER: Are you for genuine? You heavily imagine Bush did solid in Afghanistan? Boy, do I have a bridge to promote you!
