I live in a shared property in London and suspect some of my post/mail is being stolen. I understand this is a criminal offence. Does anyone know the specifics relating to this law?

What you have described is indeed a criminal offence. You'll need to get in touch with your nearest Royal Mail office and have them check it out. One problem though, once they have delivered a letter/package etc to an address, it is really out of their hands and beyond their control. However, you could arrange for all of your mail to be held at their delivery office where you can collect it yourself. Yes, this is bothersome, but it will stop people opening your mail. You'll get their phone number and can phone to ask if there's any mail etc. I have done this in the past, it works.

It is against the law to interfere with the delivery of the Royal Mail. Contact your post office or the police to report this.

well in the states, (Cali) I'm pretty sure its about 4-25yrs imprisonment, so in London I'm sure they have their specific laws. You should check into it, if you haven't done it. Try getting a p.o. box.

Get a cctv camera put on your mailbox so that you can get proof that it is stolen.
