I have a 5.5 month old baby and he's just starting solids. He's been taking between 7 and 8 ozs of milk per feed up to this point. The past couple of days when having solid food with one of his meals he takes less milk, only 4 ozs. Is this normal ?

yes it is normal for a baby to drink less milk when eating solids, but it is also very important to keep them on the formula/breast milk for at least the first year. my baby is 10 months old and still prefers milk over solids. I will give her whatever it is I am eating, and she will take a few bites...also crackers. but I am waiting until a year before I take away the bottle longer so she will eat more solids

How Much Milk When Weaning

At that age, you are strictly just beginning solids. This means that it should only be a few table spoons max per day. You should aim to give the solids during "off times" (not during his scheduled feeds) so that he doesn' t fill up on them. Right now he should be getting the bulk of his nutrition from breastmilk or formula. So, to answer your question - yes, it's normal for him to take less milk because he is filling up on something else. Is this suggested right now? No. At this stage of the game solids are just for introductory purposes. As he gets older, then you gradually increase the amounts until he is eventially eating three squares and the milk is more of an accompaniment with his solid meal and during "off times".

Oh, yes. When they take in more solids, they drink less milk, because it fills them up more, but of course they still need breastmilk or formula 'til they are at least 10 to 12 m/o for the nutrients. By then, they should be taking in enough healthy foods like veges, fruits, dairy, grains, and proteins to not need the extra calories & such.

BM or formula are still his more vital source of nutrition and solids arn't ment to replace them they are mearly added to get the baby started on eating from a spoon He sould still be taking in about the same amount of BM or formula at this age. Solid foods can't give him all the nutrients he needs yet b/c they arn't a compleat source of nutrition as BM or formula is.

My son did exactly the same then all of a sudden his appetite picked up he is now 12 months eats 3 meals a day plus numerous snacks (healthy!) and drinks around 4 pints of cows milk a day! They know what they want please try not to worry they all end up OK if you try to give them a balanced diet!

Yes it's normal.....he's substituting milk for food so won't drink as much.
I gave my daughter solid breakfast plus bottle of milk, didn't drink all so threw away..........follow for all meals, you'll know when he doesn't require anymore.
Good luck, x
