Some people do only ask questions to get a rise out of people. So in that case asking are you serious is appropriate. Some people dont give enough detail when asking a question. Thus asking them for more details is not out of the question. Sometimes its just easier for some people to answer their own question if they answer another question. I also dont feel obligated to answer stupid questions with real answers. If I sense that the person really needs an answer and is asking the question because it is a real problem for them, no matter how juvenile I think it is, I will give a real answer but most of the time thats not the case on Yahoo answers. Most of the idiotic and juvenile questions are posted to upset people or just to see what mean things people would say to them. I guess when you put it like that we probably should just ignore the question all togethere that way they dont win.

You seem to assume askers are serious. Just an assumption. I don't assume that. I'm confident some of these askers are just goofing.

And what's the harm of answering a question with a question?

Oops, I did it again.

I just think that people usually ask question to clarify another question. If what they meant was to joke at the other party, then I really don't know? Maybe they are bored?

'Are you Serious'? and other canned responses are a culturally generated product used to make you feel accepted and included in society. It's a subtle thing we do in our culture. They could just as easily be saying "AND HOW", if that were an accepted phrase that defined the culture.

I answer questions with a question, when the question is too obscure or too abstract or just down right stupid.
