I have a 92 Camaro with 150,000 miles on it. And I take it on a 1000 mile trip 3 times a year.
The biggest thing is to make sure that before you go you have the oil changed, have the transmission checked, I have even had the transmission flushed and a new filter put it. Make sure you have a clean air filter, that your radiator is up to pare, your brakes are new or really in good shape as well as your tires, and your battery is working well.
There are lots of other things that you can check, but, these are basics. I always have a can of tire air in the car on the trip, incase I get a flat, and extra water for the radiator. I just put a couple of milk gallon jugs in the back with water. Also, I take some extra food, non perishable things incase you get stranded. I never have.
Then when I am on my trip, when I stop for gas, I always check everything just to see how my fluids are. And the tires etc.
Just being concious of how your car sounds and is acting and taking breaks along the way. If I am traveling in a really cold area or really hot area, I allow the car to rest alittle at gas stations etc. Or rest areas. Especially if it's hot. Let the car cool alittle before taking off again.
Plan lots of time and have extra money in case you do have a problem.
Good luck!!!!

First have the car inspected by a competent mechanic. Does the car have fluid leaks? Are the brakes and tires in good condition, all fluids changed or recent and topped off? Belts and hoses in good shape?
The majority of problems on a road trip can be prevented by a good inspection of the car. Most problems occur with the replaceable items like belts, hoses and tires. Next in line is overheating caused by poor maintenance of the cooling system or ignoring warning signs before you take off. I am a pilot and you would never take off in an airplane without doing a preflight inspection. Do the same for your car and life will be much easier and the chances of a mechanical breakdown significantly reduced.

first... what shape it the car in...
did the owner take care of it.. change the oil every 3000 miles? change the fuilds like stated in the owners manual?
if yes.. then sure the car will preform as it should.. if the car is having problems.. then no..
you might..
do a fast tune up on it..
new plugs, hose... belts..oil... check the tires... rad,.fluid...
once that is done.. and it was taken care of in the past.. should be fine.. might put 2 or 3 gallons of anti-freeze or water in the trunk
