Mother Teresa went to a city and while she was there she went to visit a large bank CEO.
She told him that the city, needed money to build a large orphanage, and would the bank be willing to donate $1,000,000 to build one?
The CEO said; "if we do may we have your permission to publicise our gift. Mother Teresa said; No. That would be "tooting" your own horn. But if you don't I will tell the press that you refused.

Absolutely. That is extortion. It is definitely a form of blackmail which is extortion.

Is this a story you made up or something you know about or learned?

It is amazing that she had to beg for money for her work considering the fact that the Pope is the wealthiest man on the planet. Or is it really?

To be honest though, $1 M is $1 M and I doubt she would turn it down over such a trifle. Imagine how she might have done had she worked with Dr.Muhammed Yunis founder of the Grameen Bank which does not feed the poor but lends them uninsured micro loans to build self sustaining lives.

So where did this scenario come from?

This wasn't extortion. Read the story, people! Mother Teresa was saying that if the CEO did NOT publicize the event, that SHE would tell the press that the CEO had refused to publicize it.

This would make both people happy. Mother Teresa would have a sponsor who didn't "toot his horn", and the bank CEO would get a lot of pats on the back from the community for his humility!

See what I mean, folks? Whew...some people just don't get it.

It would be very stupid and unethical of Mother Teresa. Is she going to send out press releases every time someone does not contribute when she asks? That would be a lot of work for her to do, and the press would probably ignore her.

If the press did not ignore her, they would seek comments from the company, and it would not reflect well on Mother T. that she complains when she doesn't get exactly what she asks for.

Companies are not obliged to donate to every charity that solicits them.

I'm not sure if it qualifies as extortion, but it seems closely related to it.

No, Mother Teresa could do that in a democracy any time. Why not. the Unions do it all the time "If you don't join the union, we break your leg," its perfectly legal in the US. But about Mother Teresa. Make a calculation. she saved 210,000 Indian women from starving to death. They had on average 14 kids each, which starved to death. Is M Teresa responsible for the horrible death of 2,940,000 kids?

The bank manager should say: "I will give you as much as I can from my own pocket. However I cannot give you the Bank's money. It belongs to my customers and it is not mine to give away"

I wish politicans would learn such words by heart. Because I can change banks, but not countries.

BTW yes, it would be extortion. And "Charities" do it every day

Extortion is a criminal offense, which occurs when a person either obtains money, property or services from another through coercion or intimidation or threatens one with physical harm unless they are paid money or property.
