My son is in 5th grade and has been having alot of problems with reading comprehension. He has been tested for learning disabilities and he was diagnosed fairly young with ADD. He has been attending this school since preschool and has always struggled (especially in Reading) I have noticed that his writing are not capitalized, punctuated, etc. and the teacher puts a check on the paper. I try to meet with his teachers and schedule appointments but they seem "to busy" or they don't return my calls. I am finally meeting with the principal today. What would be some good questions to ask.

My first question would be is what is the reasoning behind your son just getting a check on his paper when there are obvious errors? Also ask why the teacher is avoiding you. The teacher is obvious not doing his/her job, nor is the school for that matter. I would be so mad if I hadn't heard back from the teacher after repeated attempts. They should have set up some help for you and your son. Ask if there is an aide that can work with your son.

There is a law called IDEA, it stands for Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Under this law all children have a right to a quality education. By now your child should have had an IEP in place (Individualized Education Program) This is a written plan for serving students with disabilities.
There are many laws and programs out there to help your child and his school doesn't seem to be utilizing any of them. If you have time look up the IDEA plan and the IEP plan and research them a little bit, so you can question the principal about them. I could go into them but it would take up way to much space. Remember, you are you son's advocate, your have to stick up for him. It is your school's job to help him learn and provide him with an education. There are no reasons that are acceptable as to why this isn't being done.

I wish I'd had more parents like you when I was a teacher. most parents couldn't be bothered to come to school. ask how to schedule a parent-teacher conference. at our school, parents went through the guidance department. ask 1. if the standards have been lowered for your child. 2. is he in any special classes? 3. what does the check mark mean? 4. what can you do at home to help him read better? 5.can anyone tutor him outside school or during school with his reading? reading comprehension is the most important thing for a child to master or he'll never be able to function on his own in the world. or not function as well.

Why is my child being allowed to slip through the cracks? *That'll get their attention
What are you going to do about it?
What are things I can do at home to help?
Is there a way to contact the PTA about the disconcern of the teachers in the school? *That should be a nice discussion... See how many other kids & parents are being ignored..
Don't be to angry though.. They won't listen.
Good Luck!! I hope he gets help!
