I agree with most of the answers so far.
I think true genius requires a disavowal of ego, a certain predisposition to think critically - to perceive, to analyze, and to synthesize information and ideas, an acknowledgment that, really, the best you can do is offer a good guess, that you really don't know anything, but mostly that genius IS tragic. As my daughter and I have discussed, intelligence, insight, and wisdom are isolating. It's extremely lonely being smart (especially since most extremely intelligent people are a little crazy, too).
To these ideas, I'd add that "becoming a genius," insofar as it's possible, may require extensive, unattached study. I read and read and read and read and take in as many ideas and viewpoints as I can in order to attempt to identify threads of commonality. I am by no means a genius, at least not officially ;-), but I think intensive study, predisposition, and humility are as good a start as any to becoming one.

A person is a genius only based on how in tune his ideas are with the rest of his ceaselessly working mind. All of us has almost same levels of intelligence at birth, but it is how we are able to play to our mental strengths that determine who becomes "smarter",as it were. In short, if you want to become a genius - always remember to play to your mental strangth after finding out what it is - whether it be logic, memory, understanding or sheer speed.

One of the smartest things you can do is realize you know nothing. This realization does not make you a genius but then again nothing can do that since there is no such thing as genius.

It is not very clear if the questioner is confusing the two things: GENIUS & SUCCESSFUL HUMAN BEING. Normally, people who are considered geniuses are NOT socially and financially successful. Off-course there are many exceptions. But in general, GENIUS IS ONE WHO DOES NOT WORRY ABOUT THE NORMAL PARAPHERNALIA OF SOCIAL LIVING AND IS ALWAYS "OUT OF THE ORDINARY" IN OBSERVATIONS, INFERENCES, ANALYSES, CONCLUSIONS AND CONVICTIONS. He/ She would never "compromise" on quality to mediocrity, irrespective of the socio-economic consequences, even if the said genius is NOT 100% accurate. Their convictions, which are borne out of their high IMAGINATION and EXTRA-SENSORY PERCEPTION beyond common people, are so dear to them that they would go to any length to PURSUE AND ACHIEVE AN END that they consider is PERFECTION. They are not worried about how the general society views them, even bordering on absolute ridicule, but their STEADFASTNESS in arriving at an END RESULT of their PURSUIT is dearer to them than anything else.
Socrates and Sir Isaac Newton are two examples from two space-time situations, and two different thoughts and actions. While Socrates propounded his ideas and theories on how society should be functioning, Newton worked on the Fundamental Principles on which the Universe functions. Without going into the theoretical and other explanations, suffice it to state that BOTH SOCRATES AND NEWTON WERE ABSOLUTELY INDEPENDENT AND STEADFAST IN THEIR OWN WORLDLY PURSUITS AND ARRIVED AT THEIR OWN IDEAS AND CONCLUSIONS THROUGH UNINHIBITED THOUGHTS AND ACTIONS, TEMPERED BY THEIR OWN OBSERVATIONS, INFERENCES, ANALYSES, CONCLUSIONS AND CONVICTIONS. Today, we do consider both these Giant Human Thinkers as erstwhile geniuses.

you really cant, a genius is born and not made. you cant become one, you can only be more intelligent, but not a genius if you aren't in the first place. Geniuses are those that can quickly become intelligent.

Any intelligent fool can make things bigger and more complex... It takes a touch of genius - and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction....Albert Einstein.
I suggest to find out what courage is first before you get on that boat.
Here's a hint: Courage is knowing what not to fear...Plato.
Enjoy!
