i have a dell inspiron 6000 with two slot, it came with a 256mb pc2 3200 ddr2 sdram and i just bought a upgraded memory ram 1gb pc2 4200 ddr2 sdram. Before I installed the upgraded ram. Does it work if i were to install my new 1gb pc2 4200 ram in the 1st slot and the old 256mg pc2 3200 in the second slot?

my dell support 3200 and 4200. they both have the 200pin.

That all depends if the chipset supports this....some motherboards will slow down your 1 gig pc4200 to match the slower 256 mb pc 3200.....

Since the 4200 is faster, I would just leave the 256 out.....it wont hurt to try though, either it will work, or it wont......

It will work but your 4200 will be slowed down to the 3200 speed. You may run into memory errors, and slow performance. If this happens remove your 256 ram chip. If your motherboard will not support the faster RAM then you will know when it starts up. Bad RAM will not let your computer boot.

You'll be fine as long as the pins line up. The key diff between various models of memory circuits is the configuration of the pins.
