Internet Explorer is an integral part of Windows and cannot be removed. You can only remove its icon. Besides without IE, you could not get the monthly Windows updates which will make your computer a huge security risk.
Popup blockers, such as the Yahoo and Google toolbars, will only stop web based popup advertising. They can help somewhat but will do nothing to stop popups on a computer, like yours, that is badly infected with trojan downloaders that are contacting other computers to download and deliver the pop up ads.
Try a full cleaning and dis-infection routine, if you are getting excessive popups, or are getting popups even when you are offline.
This is the one I use (it will take some time).
1. Scan for virus and remove (free online scan) with BitDefender
http://www.bitdefender.com/site/home/
2. Scan for trojans, adware and spyware and remove (free online scan) with Ewido
http://www.ewido.net/en/
Good luck.

You've got me confused?!?!? You say you are using Mozilla Firefox, so then why is Internet Explorer showing up with popups? Use one or the other, but not both. And no, you can't uninstall Internet Explorer, it is part of Windows. You can disable it, so that it doesn't run.
then you go on about how you're planning to switch to AVG after what free trial??
One thing at a time, here. Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel and Add/Remove Programs. When the list loads, on the left side click on Add/Remove Windows Components. When that list loads, find Internet Explorer and remove the checkmark by it. Close the control panel and restart the computer to finish this action. Now you will only have Firefox.
Do you have Norton installed on a free trial? If that's what you meant, you really need to uninstall that mess while you have Add/Remove Programs open. Then when you restart the computer, you finish two jobs at once. THEN download and install AVG 7.5, the free version, and use it.

Firefox provents pop-ups a lot better than Internet Explorer.. Maybe your pop-up blocker isn't working. In click tools in the toolbar and go to pop-up blocker. Maybe it's off.

Keep using firefox, but don't uninstall IE. Microsoft.com won't allow you to download any updates from their site unless you use IE.
You can block popup ads in firefox by clicking on the Tools menu, then Options. Select the Content tab, and check the "block popups" box.

I had Internet Explorer too and I had some nasty pop-ups so I downloaded Yahoo and got rid of it. Maybe you could down load something and get rid of it. I have AVG also and it scans my computer every time I turn it on. Good Luck!
