I have a couple of times, but only when I ran out of my HE detergent. I don't know what would happen, but I wouldn't really want to find out. We paid a lot of money for this washer, and they recommend using HE detergents.

I feel the same as you do about being wasteful, so my old stuff sits in the cupboard and I use it for my hand washing items.

Give your regular laundry detergent to a friend or family member & use only the laundry detergent you're supposed to. I use Tide "HE" licquid detergent.

It works fine, but you need to cut the detergent down to about a third of a normal load full. So if you normally use 1 cup, cut it to 1/3rd of a cup. Too much in of any type of soap will cause a sud fest.

It will work just fine - just put it directly in the drum - I found that the powder type gummed up in the detergent tray. If it's liquid it is fine to use just use 1/3rd less.
