The easiest way to go about it is to find the brand of file cabinet, (Hon, Steelecase, ETC) usually written on the front of the filing cabinet. then if you take a look at the front of the lock were you stick the key in there are going to be some letters and numbers, write these down and call a locksmith, giving him the file cabinet brand and these numbers and he can make you a key for $5, and you will now have an extra key for the next time this happens.

It depends on how expensive the cabinet is. Calling a locksmith might cost more than a new filing cabinet. If that's the case, drill the lock to open it. Depending on the brand of the cabinet, it might even be possible to buy a new lock for a few dollars.

If you don't want to make it someone elses job i.e. a locksmith or the file cabinet manufacturers try the following. Turn it upside down and sometimes you can get at the rods and so on that activate the locking system. I have opened cabinets by this sort of approach. Real useful if you want to see what your boss has said on your annual appraisal

That wasn't the best move for today!
You might have to get someone with a drill to bore out the barrel of the lock- if you can't wait for a locksmith- otherwise it's bloody hard.
