The toilet is almost overflowing as it flushes.I checked to see if there was any blockage but found nothing.Over time the level of water decreased in the toilet to almost nothing.Also the shower is involved because the water did not properly drain as i took a shower.I would rather not have to go to a plumber.

if the toilet and the shower are both not draining properly sounds to me like you have a blockage in the line. Plunging probably won't help in this case. It may work itself out it may not. Best bet would be to call someone or to snake out the line yourself. You can pour a bucket of water into the toilet, it might help. NEVER put drain cleaner in a toilet.
free advice, never put anything besides toilet paper and "that other stuff" down a toilet. tampons, cleaning wipes, baby wipes or anything like that will not break down and usually cause a good blockage.

They must both use the same drain pipe. Try plunging your bathtub since you found no blockage in your toilet. If you have access to the drain pipe under your shower you can check the trap for blockage too.

get a plunger and plunge the toilet, there's a blockage or clog somewhere. you could also try liquid plummer- put it both in your toilet and shower drain.
