As as been said many times by many different people:
"We should mark the anniversary by celebrating the fact that it was Britain that did the most to stop it. We were the first country to ban it, and the size and power of the Royal Navy during the 19th century gave us the power to destroy it elsewhere."
"I don't expect the current generation of Germans to apologise for the wars, when they were not even born."
"Are the Italians planning reparations for the misdeeds of the Roman Empire ? Will the French apologise for invading us in 1066 ? How about the Vikings, Germany invaded most of Europe. History is history, it cannot be expected that subsequent generations should apologise ad infinitum for the actions of their forebears. If that were so, every nation on the planet would be doing nothing else but trying to expunge their collective guilt. Learn from history by all means, but otherwise let it go."

Actually, quite a few have asked this question. Only the Church, Tony Blair and a few others seem to want to say sorry. Frankly, as I've posted before, slavery is continuing in the African continent to this day. Surely, instead of wittering on about a 200 year old situation, these same people should be trying to deal with today's problem. Of course, that's quite difficult and no-one wants to be bothered.

No one today needs to apologize for anything to anyone because the whites to day are not the ones that killed the native americans and stole their land and they are not the ones that enslaved blacks. Also the native americans and blacks who were those white's victims are no longer alive to recieve their apology. Everyone just needs to accept it and move on with educating our children about it, so that it does not happen again and they dont grow into the bigots that frequent this website.

This has never made sense to me. Nobody is alive who suffered under slavery or many other human rights abuses committed centuries ago.
I had a great, great grandfather whose horse and home were confiscated by the North because he was affiliated with the South during the Civil War. Should I expect the government to apologize or pay ME money because of what they illegally did to him 150 years ago? No way.
I have no problem with government apologizing for wrongs. And slavery was evil. But when it comes to giving out monetary benefits, reserve it for the people who actually suffered, not their whiny (and free!) descendants.

No, ... becouse they cant, they dont remember, they dont care.
First becouse wicht shoud have done it, are already deahth. Of course they had their womens and childs, the ones found served a paradise of free and cheap manworkship wich they silent abused . But I am toolking more about the thousands and thousands of death black slaves, rapted from Africa by the Englishs, the Holands, The Spaniars and the Portugueses; that of American indians, exterminated by your army to do to white man his home.
After American policy went through the secesion war, and in the name of making to black people a blaze, they let them go to die in the name of "his country" to their own battlings fields . It was a lie, as what in the 1° war world, as it was in the 2° war, in the Corea war and, in specialy in the Vietnam war; as it is is, decades after in the Golf wars.
Do you know that the number and proportion of casualties are much bigger on that sector than in any one. Well, contrast that figures and if their are objetive; ask you way.
They used them for the risker tasks, they didnt spend enought resources in their protection, always telling them, that if you go home -if you do at all-, you will see a respected full man in your mirrow when you shave yourself in the morning, in the eyes of women and even in the eyes of your little kid. A Lay as others.
It was not until the 60s, than people as Martin L, King and some many others, including white ones, took as their own the flag what about your are asking. "It was a litle step for those man, but a great step for the entyre humanity°. Even more than reaching the moon.
Dont forget Nelson Mandela, 27 years in yeild for his commiment and his courage.
The thing is that american negros and what is left of american indians, prefers to be °citizens° of a big nation that
a marginal group wihtout much individual hope. If you cant win them, bee their allies°
Well, hoping you accept my anwer as valid, and that you will excuse the English, of a white male from across the world wich tried honestly to respond to your question. Recibe my best regard, R.P..

The Pope said sorry to the Jews for the actions of some in the Catholic church over the centuries, so why not a compassionate 'sorry' to all victims of tyranny. May not be our fault today, but it goes a long way to heal the wound.

The truth is that even a four year old knows how to apologize.
It hurts NOONE to do this but it will HEAL MANY!
And the past is present today. Oppression still exists.
Look at all the uneducated and the several racists that answered this question as a prime example.
As soon as we acknowledge the past we can begin to move forward and heal.

Abolition was in the 1860s, how is that 200 years ago?
I never did anything bad to any native indians, we are best friends and business partners.
Place your bet please, or let someone else sit.
