I've been using Spybot for a year or so with no problems. The past couple of weeks everytime I run it, just as it's getting to the last bit the whole computer crashes and I have to restart. I never know if it's found anything or not. I've uninstalled and reinstalled and it's still the same. Anyone know what might be wrong?

Have you tried running both your anti virus and anti spyware in safe mode? Programs can't load in safe mode, so if its a virus or trojan it goves you a better chance of removing it. I'd run AVG anti spyware first as well. And make sure you have the right Spybot Search & Destroy form safer networking! There are fakes with a similar name.

You may need to switch off System Restore as back up files may be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.
Run your anti virus and anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

I would recommend removing and reinstalling the program. It may have been the installation of another program or a computer crash that corrupted it. It also could be a virus. Spybot is for searching spy-ware not for viruses. Download and run specific anti-virus software.

Spybot uses a lot of CPU power when scanning. It is possible that your CPU is overheating towards the end of your scan and shutting down your machine to protect it.

Have you cleaned dirt, dust, pet hair, human hair, goop, etc out of your cooling fans lately?

Just an idea. Hope it helps.

Do not anyhow meddle with the settings of Spybot...Just use the default settings...and you will be fine with it.
