Maybe this happens only in the U.S. but everyone I have asked tells me they're from Seoul. I never had anyone say they're from somewhere else. Maybe some Americans of South Korean descent can help me out here.

Uh, I'm married to a Korean and know many Koreans, I've never noticed that they say they're from Seoul. My guess is that for casual queries is that they say Seoul because most people know it and they don't have to explain where they're actually from... also Seoul is the major city and is likely to have a higher number of people from it.

Well Seoul's a big city, have you considered that?

I'm not South Korean, and I'm only going off what I know from school and 60 Minutes... which is not much.

Seoul is the capital and has over 10 million inhabitants, so the odds are that people do come from Seoul. Additionally, even if you are from a nearby suburb, people say they are from the most recognizable city.

I talked to South Koreans, and only two of the three claimed to be from Seoul. The other proudly said he was from Incheon.

Probably for the same reason I tell people I am from Baltimore or Washington DC when I live in Annapolis.

How well do you know your So. Korean Geography? If someone said they came from Pusan would you know where it was (or what country for that matter) even though it is a city of over a million people?
