I'm helping my boyfriend create a webpage for a business venture he would like to start up. He has already registered a domain name.

Since he works all the time he has left the building of the web page up to me, but I don't know where to start or what I am even doing. I learned how to build a web page in 8th grade, but I'm 23 now and all that info that I had is now gone.

As much info as you can give me would really help me out. Even web page references would be super.

Thanks a bunch!

you have to ask your self a few questions first

1 what services do I need ?
2. how much of a budget do I have?
3. how much time do I want to spend on writing it?
4. where am I going to host it?

what services will the web site need?
will you accept credit cards ?
is it just an information page?
you will need to answer this before doing anything
because if you need advanced services and have a good budget the best way to go would be have someone write it and host it and manage it.

if you don't need advanced services and just want an information site and have the time and patience to write it your self I would start at

http://www.htmlgoodies.com/
but it will take you a while to get a decent one started. (I would not recommend it if it is for a business)

if you want to write the bare minimum amount of code you will first have to buy a program like
web expressions or adobe dreamweaver
the learning curve is not bad but you will have to devote a good amount of time to know these programs. once you know the program you can buy a template from sites like
http://www.templatemonster.com/
http://www.expressiongraphics.net/
http://www.frontpage-templates.org/ (has good amount of links)

you will need a hosting site
I would stick to the major companies ie (earthlink) unless money is an issue

Most people hire a web site designer because it is fairly difficult. Depending on who is hosting your website domain name, they can provide you with sources such as templates to get you started. I recommed that you learn html and flash because the first is necessary and the second adds nice graphics to the site. Definetly install Dreamweaver if you dont want to learn either because everything is visual in dreamweaver all you have to do is drag and drop the visual stuff, no html(unless you want), but I think it is kind of expensive, try out the trial version and if it works for you buy it.

Wow, he is asking a lot from you. Web design is NOT easy and can't be learned very quickly. Here are some links to try and help:

http://werbach.com/barebones/ - gives easy HTML code.

http://www.adobe.com/products/dreamweaver/ - dreamweaver makes web design much easier, but still need a lot of training.

Also, when you view a page that you like, go to 'View' then 'Page Source,' you can see the code that was used to help give you ideas.

well you can do a pretty simple one with Yahoo Geocities but I have no idea how you do a name change since their webpages always have the word "geocities" in it somewhere. At least that's a place to start , and the "File Manager" and help sections pretty well guide you through the process.

Do a Google / Yahoo search for:

web+site+design

Then, do the same at Wikipedia.
