Good question! Here goes...
Medical advances (MRI, radiation therapy)
Scientific advances (NMR, high-energy experimentation, materials characterization and modification)
Energy production (see Scandanavian peninsula, France & other EU members)
Weaponry (invasion deterrent)
Certainly we _could_ live without it; we have for many, many years. The same could be said of any technological advance or advantage. But then, the U.S. wouldn't be where it is (technologically speaking) if we suddenly gave up all our technological know-how.

I think that it has helped us in many ways, we use nuclear engery to treat various cancers and generate energy. Even though it was an extereme response in WW II, the Japanese would have fought until their country was totally depleted otherwise. In this case it actually saved many more lives than it cost.
I'd look around the net for various uses of nuclear energy for a more complete picture.

Of course we could live without it. Most of the world lives without it.
How has it helped us?
1. The military aspect - it has prevented, or at least, delayed World War III.
2. Many believes it actually provides cleaner energy - as long as we are veeeerrrrrrrryy caaaaarefull!!!!
