perhaps its true that some people will use a pet to replace a need of theirs
older owners may long for their children to return home and therefore pour their love into a pet.
but i dont think there is any serious problem with that?

I'm afraid that I must be one of those people you are describing but I would never have thought this would suggest inadequacy. It shows a nurturing/caring personality, a need to be needed or relied upon by someone or something else. There are those who have a pet, those who have children and even the really brave ones who have the responsibility of both.
I have a loving family around me and part of that family is a house rabbit.
A pet can be a marvellous stress reliever, really quite relaxing to come home from a hard day at work and for the bunny to greet me by jumping on my lap to have her nose rubbed and her head scruffled, she likes it too because she has a snooze. That is just a very small animal and I can only imagine how much pleasure a dog can bring.

Rubbish. To be obsessed with your pet means you care. There maybe a more deeper reason to love your pet so much, substitute for not having children, not good at making friends or just because you prefer pets. Lets face it, pets are more loyal than some people and can give love unconditionally. Doesn't mean you are inadequate at all. I have real friends and have a husband who loves me to bits and a son who thinks the world of me. Am also close to the rest of my family too. I still have two cats a rabbit and am going to get Guinea pigs once we have moved. I have love for all my family and my pets, i think that makes me a nice person with loads of love to give, and enjoy it from my family, friends and my pets. I am not obsessed with my pets, nor am i lacking in friends or family nor am i sad. Seems to me you have something against the owners of pets?

Why is it sad???
Lots of people out there, find it difficult to make friends or may be they have some deformity or disability that they feel people are not very accepting of, animals accept you totally and unconditionally, they don't give a stuff what you look like. I had a really bad period of depression a few years ago and a lot of my so-called friends didn't want to know so stayed away, if it hadn't been for my family, and especially for the dogs I had at the time, needing me to continue to feed them and walk them, then I don't think I would be here now, if people think that is sad then they don't have much compassion for their fellow humans!

No it does not. I am 29 years old, married with loads of friends and a fantastic family, and I do adore my pet. It certainly does not make me inadeqate, sad or pathetic. It shows i am compasionate and caring with lots of love to give.
I have been an owner of cats and hamsters and loved them all equally and took great care over giving them a happy, healthy life.
May I also point out that pets bring such pleasure to humans that if you own a pet it has been medically proven to reduce every day stress levels and decreases your chance of a heart attack by half?

I dont think you understand. I think you are one of the people who will go out, buy a puppy, and put it in a kennel for its whole life. The way you are fighting the "they come first" thing is wrong. Think about it.
You are buying a life. You are responsible for that life. Thinking that they come first(before games and sex and parties and yourself) is very, very right. You bought a life. That life can not find food for itself, or water, or anything else. It is in a kennel or house where it cant do that. So you are caring for it.
Now, being obsessed like, buying clothes for a dog, pampering its every little need(hair cuts every week, water out of a diamond studded bowl, food off a plate of silver, etc), bringing it to a salon, bringing it everywhere, not letting it be a dog(or cat or whatnot) is too obsessed.
There is a fine line but "they come first" is not crossing it. I mean, dont say to your friends "My dog has seperation anxiety, I have to stay home forever or bring her with us" but dont leave your dog home for 17hrs a day and then come home, feed it, and go to bed. Thats wrong. They need the attention they deserve.

Of course it doesn't! I have plenty of friends, family, a boyfriend and i'm studying for a degree and do work experience in a hospital, i go to the gym, i'm on a korfball team..... but i still love my cats! And i talk to them. Animals have their own "personality" when you get to know them, and if you truly cared for your pets it would be impossible not to get attached to them! Yes maybe some people have pets to replace parts of their life that they feel are missing, but that doesn't make them inadequate. Don't be so mean!

what level of obsession are you talking about? I love my cats to bits, get them lots of toys, talk about them all the time and always put them first - I also live with my boyfriend, have a fantastic family, alot of friends and am in the final year of my degree. I dont think your statement has any grounding whatsoever
and to the person who said about talking to their pets - so what? obviously they dont understand every word, but they can hear the tone of your voice, my old dog used to come and put his head on my lap when i was feeling low. and best of all they dont talk back and offer lame advice, you can just vent to them

Autistic people could be described as 'inedequate' if you're cruel enough, they often find it easier to relate to a pet than people.
You don't define 'obsession'. What you think of as obsession might be a normal level of concern and empathy.

I have two German Shepherds who are my life, yes they are dogs not "people with furry coats" and are treated as such. However my dogs don't lie, cheat, steal and I trust them beyond any human I know. If that makes me a sad or inadequate person in your eyes, so be it, I couldn't care less.
