If you have a light color carpet I would use a steam cleaner with bleach and water. I have to do this in my daughters room since I have a cat that likes to use the carpet instead of the litter box.

White vinegar. Saturate the carpet and let it air dry. Should disinfect and break down odor and the vinegar smell will go away. If that doesn't work, try buying Nature's Miracle at a pet store. Same instructions.

If you're brave enough to try it, a small amount of bleach in a steam cleaner/carpet shampooer works really well. I use it on my dark, burgundy carpeting. It doesn't affect the color and leaves everything smelling very good!
