people in the US generally work 50 weeks of every year, just to get a 2 week vacation. if they're lucky. they're like slaves. after work they are allowed a football game and a beer, and this makes them happy. on the weekend they are happy if they can just sleep. retirement is when work is replaced by trying to fix the health problems you've attained over the years, many that went unnoticed for quite a while.
shouldn't there be more to life? I don't think we're here just to put on a suit and tie every day, go to meaningless meetings, where you see other people in suits use corporate jargon to say nothing. and they take forever to say nothing.
any thoughts?

Not everyone has a corporate job like that. Thats generally people that went into business under a large corporation. And people working 50 weeks out of a year, thats definitely not everyone. Teachers, depending on what they teach, dont work that much. And there are single moms out there with kids that works more than that and have more than one job. My dad works at a big corporate building and he doesn't have to wear a tie and he gets more than just 2 weeks vacation. So maybe it also depends on teh department you work at? The citizens of the US arent in a form of slavery, theyre living a life that they made. Some people like having to wear a tie everyday and go to work and have little vacations. Theres people in third world countries that are in more of a form of slavery than we are. There is more to life but youre the one that has the power to say "enough is enough" remember, we're free..... you just need money ^^;

Life is what you make of it, brother. A job you hate is nothing but work work work - unless of course you have the right attitude. The trick is to work at something that has meaning to you...and if you can't do that then at least have a good attitude and make peace with where you are at. Happiness is a choice, that's all there is to it.
As far as health care, ok, here I go...
I have no idea why they even call it health care. Why isn't it called sick care? And how safe/sane is it that they (the 'health establishments') Make money when we are sick? Shouldn't we PAY them when we are WELL?
Again, the answer is in yourself. You have to take charge of your health and be proactive. Relying on 'them' to take care of us - fix us with pills & sugery is not only dangerous, but sheer stupidity! Your diet is your best preventitive medicine, but will the Doc tell you that? Hell no! They know nothing about prevention because they only get to learn about MEDICINE in MED school.
Read The China Study and learn some good preventative info.
Read The Road Less Travelled to get a better grip on you meaninglessness.
The 'more' to life that you seek can be found in giving.
It really is true that 'In giving, we recieve.'

You are OH SO RIGHT! What is slavery? HAVING to work for someone else and they reap all of the benefits while you do the labor. Now I am not really talking about the employee/employer relationship. I am talking about the self imposed slavery of DEBT. We take on the yoke of college loans, mortgages, car loans and then the usery of credit card debt. It's nice to have some toys and goodies but then we HAVE to get up and go to a job we hate with people we hate doing a stupid job that really in the big picture rarely contributes to anybody's welfare except the big stockholders and executives. You don't call THAT SLAVERY! If you are a young person and you aren't already on the treadmill listen to this old girl's advice: AVOID DEBT LIKE YOU AVOID A PLAGUE! My husband and I drive old cars that we own, we paid off our mortgage like our lives depended on it now own our home, we wear our clothes until they are worn out, buy only stuff we need or REALLY want and can pay cash for. As a result I can stay at home and paint portraits which I sell and he can work part time as a woodworker and pick up some extra money working as a waiter. I am also home with my son who is about the best adjusted teenager you ever met. On a weekday when everyone else is dragging off for another day of drudgery (even if they ARE driving a Lexus and wearing a $1200 suit and $500 shoes) we might be gardening or out in our little boat on the river or off on a family trip. Now WHOSE rich and whose the slave?

It's all about what you do with it. I used to have a great high paying job in a well respected company and all the perks. It was a drudgery - so I jumped. I went back to school part time to get certified as a chef and learned book keeping - I am a CFO for a small but happy business with a great heart for protecting the environment. I make lots less but still eat just as well (if not better) and I am lots happier.

If you want change you have to make it happen. Good luck and soft landings!

Amen, Brotha Grr!

I sit and think this 24-7 in my little 3X5 "holding pen" of a cubicle. I've never commited a crime but Im in a "cell" smaller than Alcatraz, doing a 25 to life bid... for retirement money that may or may not be there.

Thats why I started saving my pennies and trying to become financially self-sufficient so I can break free of these shackles that bind me. If you could see the mindless work Im forced to do right now, despite my education... you'd be sick to your stomach!!!!!

Enough is enough.

Im tired of working for "da man", f*ck him... he's been f*cking me...over...for the past 13yrs!!! You know many years ago I was christened as a baby in a church before the eyes of GOD as Marissa Claire Jeffreys...now apparently Im employee # 399017. I guess "da man" now outranks God.

Im going to shave my head, move to Amsterdam, make artwork out of recycled garbaged and just become a vegan hippy. No better yet a free-gan!! Screw this sh*t, man!

I got dreams, needs, goals, aspirations... and like a bad marriage this hell-hole is sucking them right out of me. Im being mentally-raped daily for the sake of a paycheck, over half of which is funding the "American Dream" to the faceless sadistic bill collectors that harass me the 2 waking hours of the day Im sitting at home!

Oh, ixx-nay on the alk-tay, stupervisors approaching

Man down!

Man down!

You have a point. The treadmill. still fashioned the same old predictable way. Who will run the business of business of other businesses? an endless cycle, someone must get on it for another to get off, if not. the world will stop moving. same old, same old.The vacation of a lifetime is good. and there is that other work needing done it doesn't pay high wages and the benefits are great, at least that's what I have been hearing from someone who loves me. Have a nice day.

This has been on my mind for quite some time. When you break it down even smaller the picture becomes even bleaker. On a daily basis the average person works 8 hours, commutes for 1 or 2 hours, and if they are lucky enough to sleep for 8 hours that leaves them 6 hours of waking time for themselves. But once you break down these 6 hours you will find the majority of it taken up by household tasks. We do this our entire lives and then we die right after we retire. And during the time we are alive after retirement we are too bitter and physically damaged to enjoy our free time. We have been bamboozled brothers and sisters. We may have nice cars and big houses but answer me this. Why have I seen starving Africans smiling on infomercials more than I see Americans smiling while driving down the street in their $60,000 SUVs?

While I agree that life should have more meaning, the reality is that work is a necessary evil for most of us.
While your example of corporate business is compelling, you seem to forget that there are many more "jobs" out there, some with value to the community, value to our country and our world. Many of us are happy in our jobs. We value the work we do. and I daresay that this is a condition to be found around the world, not only in America.
We are not drones....we choose our occupations.

It's your choice, so live with it. Either rise above or deal. The slavery we should ALL be worrying about is even more prevelant today than it was in the 1800's and it's happening in Africa on an unprecidented scale. A great deal of the world's supply of cocao ( think chocolate) comes from the ivory coast and upwards of 90% of the farms there employ slaves who never get paid, but get beaten regularly. WTF do we have to complain about, again? I forget.

The term is wage slaves. It only stops when you quit caring about money and treat it as only a tool to achieve what you really want.
