Since you're asking I will take it you're not LV old timers, If you would like to try some low limit gambling, there are the best places.
Craps-From 5-10pm weekdays the Westin Casuarina has happy hour - you can play $1 craps
Pai Gow Poker-Blackjack-The Orleans has plenty of $5 tables and, it's a great place to play.
Roulette-Stratosphere has a single zero table, during the day the table minimum is often $5>this is the only single zero $5 roulette table in LV
Video Poker - You can play very good(9/6 JOB-99.5%) at the LV Hilton, in their sports book they have 27 Nickel machines, and even more at the quarter level. You can play a great low limit game in the best sports book on the planet and drink free.
If you want to get away from the strip try, Red Rock Canyon, Mt. Charleston, Hoover Dam or if you want to go all out, a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon.
http://www.maverickhelicopter.com >the best
If you go downtown, Vegas Club has a very nice sports memorabilia collection & Main Street Station has so many Antiques & Artifacts from all over the world that is should qualify as a museum. >The .99c shrimp cocktails at the Golden Gate(oldest hotel/casino in LV - 1906) are a LV legend<

I'll suggest places that are fun without making you feel like you have to be "trendy" . Harrah's outdoor bar(Local call it the Carnival)........good drinks and live music. Caesar's Forum is an unexpected place to meet people, Margaritaville on the strip by the Flamingo Hilton is fun and has live music on Fridays or Saturdays and you can order food there too, off the strip you could go to Moose's Beach house across from UNLV and Metro Pizza down the street is another popular college spot, the ESPN Zone in New York/New York is fun too. Mandalay Bay is the hangout for a lot of the young and trendy crowds along with the Palms. To avoid crowds and have fun, go to Neonopolis- Jillian's is the place to go there with bowling, bar, live music, good food, and a movie theater across from it. Also, don't forget about Mt. Charleston for great hiking and mountain views and Red Rock Canyon
