To willingly go into areas where mad-men armed to the teeth roam free, when those sub-life forms kill for "fun"...
just to try & save lives, or improve the lives of those poor people, takes more courage than most people can ever imagine; they offer humanity a 1st class example re: how to live with decency; they are heroic... & on the side of Angels.
Do relief agency workers receive medals?

OK relief workers do great things for people... no question about that. Some may do it out of selfless service some may be trying to buy their way to the promised land through work. As far as soldiers fearing to tread anywhere... well if we only truly knew where many soldiers have been that they will never be able to tell us about.... I think we'd be shocked....

They are brave and dedicated to their way of making this a better world. They have to have a bit of both qualities: a bit too innocent and angelic and a bit nutty, but 100% true.
We're lucky that this world still manages to (mostly) respect those willing to lay down their lives to run under bullets, over minefields to patch another human being up be they a combattant or an innocent bystander. Its in everyone's holy books and it is only the few who refuse to read those bits that end up killing relief workers.

I vote nutters myself. but back in the day people wearing the red cross on thier shirts and sleeves where declared non-combatants and therefore where not supposed to be hurt. most of the time this job was performed by the church and aid was given to anyone hurt or in need regardless of what side they where on. the first occurence of aid personel being harmed was WW2 by the italians who used mustard gas on a red cross camp. for the most part though anyone wearing a relief worker uniform or a red cross emblem is left unharmed when they pass into an area to help people.

nutters. or dreamers really. Many people seem to think that if they go someplace filled with good intentions, everyone will accept it with ratitude.
Not so.
Sadly, for many people, the very existence of a volunteer is a threat. Many "political" movements thrive on human misery (and the leaders live a life of luxury). Any improvement is a direct threat to their money supply (extortion or "taxes"). So any such "head in the cloud" volunteer will find himself/herself without a head PDQ

Isn't it the case that soldiers wont go there because they will get shot, whereas relief workers will be left alone?

I was just about to point out your error, is the book by Rann Fines? If it is he is not over generous with the truth.

whilst some people moan about atrocities around the world and donate a bit of money to charity to make themselves feel better, these people put their 'life' where their mouth is.
