Without having more details, it is hard to say. But, it sounds like the baby has a congenital birth defect. My daughter was born with a severe heart defect. Life was rough for the first year, with multiple hospitalizations and 2 open-heart surgeries. When we first found out what was wrong, it felt like the end of the world. But, we got through it, and I have a beautiful 16 yr old daughter now. She's healthy, active and very normal! If your friend's baby is born with problems, your friend will need a shoulder to cry on and lots of support. Hopefully it isn't anything too serious.

an enlarged heart is an inefficient heart.

I does not pump the blood adequately to ensure proper blood flow and can contribute to weakness and general malaise.

It is a very serious condition, and, depending upon the severity and cause can put the baby on a waiting list for transplant.

It is essential that your friend do EXACTLY what the doctors recommend as this is a potentially lethal condition.

The heart muscle enlarges when it is over working in the body. There is probably not enough blood flow or restricted in some way and her heart may be working extra hard.

How old is the baby and I am sure she is seeing a cardiologist, you will know exactly what is wrong soon.

I hope everything is ok, good luck!

she needs to ask her doctor to explain this.
She might have been too shocked to ask many questions at the time, but she needs to call back today and have all her questions answered.
