"The narrator of the story never states exactly what Farquhar does which causes the Federal army to hang him. It is implied through the descriptions in Parts I & II that Peyton Farquhar went to Owl Creek bridge to try and burn it down in order to prevent the northern forces from advancing. We know that the supposed gray-clad soldier was in fact a Federal scout who dressed in a confederate uniform, as it is mentioned in the last section of Part II. Therefore, we can also assume that the information given to Farquhar was a setup. The reader then must ask, why?"
