Americans didn't create it. It probably started in France in the 16th century. I know you weren't really interested in the facts, but that's what this site is supposed to be about. Check this link.

Actually, Americans didn't invent April fools day, in the rest of the world where it is celebrated it is called "All fools day" and it is older than the institution of the United States (harkens back to pagan traditions regarding the spring equinox.)
Everyone does foolish things, and this holiday is a reminder to us all that as humans, we all have the capacity and tendency to be silly at times.

They did not create it, it was in and all over the world for years.It actually started in Europe as a day set aside to honor the fools of the various kings and their courts. As in the Court Jester with Danny Kaye.
