It depends on where in Japan you are going to be.
If you are in or near Kyoto, try to get to the Old Imperial Castle. It's pretty much in the center of town. If you go towards the east of the city there is the huge shrine where some of the filming for Memoirs of a Geisha was shot. There are also several smaller VERY wonderful shrines and temples in the same area.
On the main street that runs from the Kyoto Station to city hal there is a HUGE shopping center. I spent two days there and still wasn't able to see everything!
Good luck!

If you mother is with child, I would recommend one of the countless bus tours the travel agencies have. They go to the modern parts of Japan, the traditional, the cultural, and the social. You can get a good glimps of what Japan is like through those tours.
Plus, not much walking for your mom.
I'm going on one myself tomorrow with my family!
