You never know. I thought the first 2/3 of Moulin Rouge were garbage, and if I'd been watching it at home I would have stopped before it was half over. But since I was in a theater with friends I watched the whole thing and the final act was very good. gutting it out til the end hasn't always worked out that well though.

Some movies are very famous but for historical reasons. They were the first to do something that had never been done before or started a new type of movie. They will seem dated to a more modern viewer but they are still considered groundbreaking. Others are considered great because the majority of people who have seen them think they are. That doesn't mean you will. Many people think Gone With the Wind is one of the greatest movies of all time and I think it is tedious and boring. It is visually stunning but I hate the story so I don't agree with the majority. Sometimes it helps to read about a movie before or after to see why it is so famous but in the end you have to judge for yourself whether the movie is worthwhile. I am of the opinion that you finish the movie but then again I try to be picky about what I rent and go see ahead of time so I'm not put into this position to often.

Personally, if you don't like a movie I think you should just stop watching it. There have been times when I've started watching a movie and found the plot either really thin or so fragmented that I lost interest. Not everyone is going to like a movie just because it wins awards. Personal taste is a big factor.

Stop it. It doesn't matter if it is "renowned" due to box office success or from critics. If YOU don't like it, its crap. Your opinion and taste is just as relevant as anyone's.

Its really pretentious when people like something because they're "supposed to".

Unless you are completely revolted, watch it to the end. that way when some snob tries to tell you how "wonderful" Lost in Translation was, you can say that was a load of incoherent garbage, I don't care who's daughter she is.

movies are art and art is in the eye of the beholder. if you don't like a piece of art at the museum you move on.

Casablanca for example......OVERRATED. I would just press stop if you're at least an hour or almost an hour in already.
